Wildlife Control – Health Risks of Wildlife Invasion in Homes

Organized systematic removal of dangerous and threatening species of wildlife is called wildlife control or nuisance wildlife management. It is required because many animal species living near us can be potential threat to humans.

Bats, opossums, skunks, squirrels, rats, mice, raccoons, snakes and pigeons are the most common nuisance wildlife. These species are dangerous to humans because they transmit disease causing bacteria and viruses. Professional wildlife control and removal service can be helpful in getting rid of them.

The earth doesn’t just belong to humans, animals are equal sharers of the resources of our planet therefore wildlife deserves its space but because they can cause diseases to human beings they have to be removed from domestic sphere. The animals which have the highest potential of causing zoonotic diseases are:

1. Raccoon

Raccoons are very dangerous as they are carriers of rabies, raccoon roundworms, leptospirosis, and salmonella. Rabies is a viral disease that causes inflammation of the brain in humans and other mammals. It is spread when an infected animal scratches or bites another animal or human. Raccoon roundworm infection is also called Baylisascaris. The species commonly found in raccoonsis Baylisascaris procyonis. When infective eggs of this roundworm are ingested by humans, Baylisascaris larvae hatch in the intestine and travel through the organs and muscles.

Leptospirosis is an infection caused by corkscrew-shaped bacteria called Leptospira. Signs and symptoms can range from none to mild such as headaches, muscle pains, and fevers; to severe with bleeding from the lungs or meningitis. Humans can get leptospirosis through direct contact with urine from infected animals or through water, soil or food contaminated with their urine.
Salmonella bacteria cause food poisoning. It enters human body generally by food contaminated by infected animals.

2. Squirrel

Squirrels are not that dangerous for humans as they do not carry zoonotic diseases but they are certainly infectious because their droppings can carry leptospirosis and salmonella bacteria.

3. Skunk

Although skunks are not infamous for causing diseases but they certainly can be bothersome when they intrude in our homes. Skunks are known for their ability to spray a liquid with a strong odor which can be really annoying and awful therefore no one wants them around their home.

4. Rats

Rats have a really threatening reputation because of the infamous plague in the middle ages causing many deaths in Europe. They are still dangerous in today’s time as they can cause rat-bite fever, ricketsia, eosinophilic meningitis (an infection of the brain), leptospirosis, and salmonella-related sicknesses.

5. Birds

Pigeon is one bird which has the highest potential to invade homes. They carry zoonotic diseases and their droppings host a fungus which causes histoplasmosis – it is a flu like disease having symptoms such as fever, chest pain, joint pain, and mouth sores. Histoplasmosis happens when a person breathes in germs that grow on pigeon droppings.

6. Bats

Bats may look harmless, but they are the most common transmitter of the rabies virus particularly in the North American continent. You should be cautious about them when they invade your home because they can bite.
