Mount Huashan, China

Mount Huashan, China

400px-Hua_Shan

Mount Hua also known as Hua Shan is a mountain situated near the town of Huayin in Shaanxi Province, China. It is one of the five great mountains of China and has a very long history which holds religious significance. This mountain is 2154 metre tall. There are five main peaks that this mountain has with breathtaking cliff faces amongst which the highest is the South Peak having a height of 7070 feet. This mountain stands true to its status as the steepest mountain under heaven. It is also popularly known by tourists as one of the most dangerous Hiking Trail in the World as this mountain has a few steep ascents via the narrow passes which makes it difficult to climb. During the summer months it gets a little overcrowded which is the biggest danger to safety. Hua Shan was historically the place where there were influential Taoist monasteries and it was also the centre for the practise of traditional Chinese Martial arts. This mountain is amongst the five holy Taoist mountains of China.

mount_huashan_steps

In the 2nd century BC there was a Taoist temple located at the base of this mountain called as the Shrine of the Western Peak. Taoists used to believe that the god of the underworld lives in the mountain. This temple located at the base of the mountain was often used by the people for spirit mediums to contact the God. Later, Taishan became a popular pilgrimage place in China but Hua Shan did not because of the inaccessibility of its summits. It was visited only by the local pilgrims and it was also a very important place for the immortality seekers as many Chinese medicines were believed to be found there. In the later years all the mountains that were located on the mountain came under the control of Taoist Quanzhen School. And in the year of 1998, the Hua Shan management committee agreed to turn over the mountain temples to the China Taoist Association. This action was taken in order to help protect the environment from poachers and loggers.

Bridge

There are three main routes that will lead you to Hua Shan’s North Peak which is the lowest one amongst the five major peaks. The most popular route is the traditional one in Hua Shan Yu which was developed in the third to fourth century A.D. It winds for 6 kilometres from the village of Hua Shan towards the North Peak. Another route is the new one in Huang Pu Yu which follows the cable car to the North Peak and is also the ancient trail which was used prior to the Tang Dynasty and had been known only to the local villagers living nearby until the year 1949 when a local guide used this route to climb the North Peak. Another trail is known as the route intelligent takeover of Hua Shan which was reinforced in the year 2000. There are cable car system station built right next to the beginning and end of this trail.

Huashan_northpeak

After reaching the North Peak there are a series of trails that rise up to the Canglong Ling which is 300 metres climb on the top of a mountain ridge. This trail was in fact the only one which led to the remaining four peaks namely the west peak which is 2038 metres high, the Centre peak 2042 metres high, the East peak being 2100 metres high and the south peak being the highest of all with a height of 2154 metres. However in the year 1998 a new path had been built to the east around the ridge.

huashan cable car

Historically, this place has been a retreat for hardy hermits as access to this mountain was only available to the strong willed people. Later in the 1980’s Chinese students began to test their courage and visited this mountain. However there have been many fatalities here hence the government decided to build stone steps and wider paths along with railings and some new tracks were opened and one way routes have been created at the steep parts of the mountain. Thus with all these measures tourism at Hua Shan has increased and there are many people who visit this mountain. Recently a new cable route has been opened too at the West peak which makes the visit to this mountain very easy and enjoyable.

Mt-hua-chess-pavilion

Watching a sunrise from the East Peak by attempting a night hike is one of the things recommended to do as the sun rise from this point is beautiful. However, you need to be careful as there are people descending the mountain and make sure you carry flashlight, extra batteries and some warm clothes. Later while descending you can plan to ascend down the very famous Yun Ding which are narrow steps probably half the length of your feet and iron chains are attached on the sides which may help you. There is a Sparrow Hawk Cliff one of the hardest trail on Mount Hua Shan which needs to be descended in order to reach the Chess Pavilion. But the view from this Chess Pavilion is magnificent offering beautiful scenery below the east peak. Thus, you can plan a trip to this mountain only if you are an adventure lover and love mountain climbing. But it is sure to give you a beautiful experience of a lifetime.

Alhambra- A Moorish Affair, Spain

Alhambra- A Moorish Affair, Spain

The ancient city of Granada is undoubtedly one of the most popular destinations in southern Spain, but the city gets is charm from the exquisite citadel and palace carrying along a celebrated history, the Alhambra. Belonging to the medieval ages, it is the only Muslim palace in the world that has survived till today. Perched on a hilltop, the grand palace was built by the Muslim ruler   Mohammed ben Al-Ahmar to serve as their protection on the Iberian Peninsula, towards the end on the 13th century. The death of the prophet Mohammed in 632 AD led to the spread of the Islamic empire away from Arabia. At its peak, the empire stretched across continents, from India to Portugal.

The Moors were nomadic people from North African country of Morocco. They were Islamic converts who made it into the Iberian Peninsula by crossing the Strait of Gibraltar. From the 8th century onwards, they had established their rule throughout Spain. Alhambra was the highlight of their entire kingdom, a symbol of their glory. Spain had been reconquered by the Christian monarchs in 1492 by the time its construction was finished. The Christian rulers also began to use certain portions of the Alhambra, with Charles V building his own palace within the Alhambra. The Alhambra thus became the last Moorish refuge, managing to flourish for another 2 centuries through trade, commerce and diplomacy in full swing.

alhambra-gardens

The Alhambra didn’t gain any more artistic Islamic influences from the rest of the world, it is safe to say, and it was largely sequestered and soon developed exotic and unique artwork that is still visible to the visitor today. Its name ‘Alhambra’ translates to the Arabic word which means “red fortress”. Being built from red clay, the name deemed to be most suitable for it. The picturesque whitewashed buildings nestled in a forest led a Moorish poet to describe it as “a pearl set in emeralds”. An oasis of decorative serenity along with its chambers and verdant gardens is tucked amidst its awe inspiring castle walls and towers. The European influences are evident on the Islamic structure. This happened after the Moors were expelled from Granada.

alhambra interior

The square and bland exterior conceals a fine form of Islamic artwork. Courtyards with small fountains, magnificent palaces, and secret gardens that evoke the tranquillity in the region are enclosed with striking ramparts of the Alhambra. The over scale of the Alhambra is impressive with exquisite details. The effort of the workers put into minute details of these features is evident.

alhambra interior2

Inside, on every surface, one can observe geometric patterns of interlocking shapes. These decorative features represent God, as in those days, the depiction of the human form was forbidden by religion. The same is also represented in the ornate calligraphy used for quotations of the Koran. The massive honeycomb ceilings with elaborate mouldings are breathtaking and they were also inspired by geometry.

gate of justice

Most of the parts which seem nothing but ordinary in the daylight, are magnificent in the night. It is said that the Alhambra was built to be seen in the night, with its shining marble retaining its whiteness and undoing its weather stains of the daytime, unlike most constructions of the period. There are four gates to the Alhambra walls one of the tourist routes to enter is through the Gate of Justice, also known as Gate of the Esplanade. The gate was built in 1348 and stands as the largest gate out of the four. Make sure to pick up an English audio tour for information of the monument. The Alcazaba building is a must visit, it was used for military affairs. The renowned ‘Vela Tower’ is located here, from where one can witness some breathtaking views of Sierra Nevada. The ruins of baths and water tanks are still visible today.

palace of charlesv

Constructed in 1533, the Palace of Charles V is a beautiful piece of renaissance architecture, with Italian influences. The museum of Alhambra is situated on the ground floor of the palace. The Granada Music and Dance festival as well as exhibitions are known to take place in its courtyard. Alhamar, the founder of the dynasty, constructed this complex of palaces in the 13th century, known as the Palacios Nazaríes. It comprises of three strikingly beautiful palaces, namely: The Mexuar, The Comares and The Palace of the Lions.

Alhambra fountains

While exploring the Alhambra, the visitor will enjoy a thrilling experience discovering space that filter light through ornate screens, a classic concept used in Islamic architecture. Wafting scents from the nearby garden, and the calm breeze will guide the visitors passing between rooms to explore more of the palace’s open plan. A pleasant combination of nature and pragmatism is evident in every corner of this majestic monument. Water has played a significant role in the concept of this monument, right from the running water flowing through hidden stone channels to exquisitely decorated fountains. The water required by the palace is satisfied the diversion of water from the Daro River from a channel cut through the Assabica hill on which the Alhambra stands.

Most of the striking Islamic artwork has been lost after the Christian monarchs extended their control over Granada. But, the vision and glory of the Moorish leaders outplays the trials and tribulations the Alhambra may have gone through, the monument today, stands as an architectural masterpiece they left behind in Spain.

Lavender Fields, UK and France

Lavender Fields, UK and France

Lavender Fields

Lavender Fields

UK and France which are famous for their Lavender Fields are home to thousands of lavender plants. The Lavender fields are really an praising view to watch which is a special one.

The Lavender field of France has literally a large number of lavender plants which are an amazing view. These lavenders bloom from late June to August depending on the area and the seasonal climatic conditions.

The blue lavender fields in Provence

The blue lavender fields in Provence

In the Luberon of France, around the Mont-Ventoux ,in the region of Sault, there is a lavender field with its splendid atmosphere and scenic view which is one of the prominent summer trip in Provence.

The lavender field, named as Somerset Lavender Farm plants around 50,000 lavender plants with growing bushes around a five acre field. The view here is just like an professional’s painting.

The history is dealt by the sayings that a fairy named Lavandula with blue eyes and blonde hair was born in the middle of the wild lavender plants of the Lure mountain in the Southern French Alps.Years grew and she needed to choose a place to settle and was looking through her landscape notebook until she saw the poor landscapes of Provence and she became sad,and started crying. When her lavender colored tears fell on the book, the book was stained into blue. She tried to wipe those stains but it is of no use and those tears were spread all over the landscapes of Provence. To protect her mistake, she drew a bug sky above the stained landscape. From that day,the Provence’s lavender and the local blonde girls blue eyes sparkle and much more when by looking the blue sky over the fields of lavender at the end of the day.

There are nearly 30 varieties of lavender which produces various colored flowers like purple, white, pink and white. The wide and popular one is lavandin which is a hybrid one.France has about 1,700 producers with 16,000 hectares of lavandin also with pure lavender of 4,000 hectares. The lavender producing industry supplies around 1,000 jobs.

Between 2007 and 2010 the region’s popular production has been lavandin which is used in soaps, perfumes, oils, insect repellents.

Now,scientists are  looking forward to the lavender which will be resistant to micro bacterium as the lavenders are suppressing their lives to a confined period as some bacteria called cicaede is acting upon them.It is really bad that the lavenders are ruined which are supposed to be atleast 10 years but are dying within 3 years. It  is a great financial loss.

Lavender is been used as an herb for over 2,500 years and also used for mummification and perfume by Egyptians,Arabians and Phoenicians in olden days.Romans used lavender oils for cooking and bathing.

Lavender are first used by the Arabians which spread through Europe from Greece and also France. They used to use lavender as a decoction to gin, vodka and also are used for migraine head aches.

Lavender gives an unique fragrance which is one among top commercial products.France is considered as the world leader in growing and producing in lavender.

Lavender fields bordered with grains

Pearl of the Adriatic-Polignano a Mare,Province Bari,Apulia,Italy

If you have been planning to impress your artsy mate with an extravagant proposal in the grandest backdrop ever, and have already suffered elimination of more places than manage any selection, due to her hateful intolerance towards everything clichéd, then “The Pearl of the Adriatic Sea”, a little medieval town on rocky cliffs of Polignano a Mare, Italy, is YOUR place!

BARI35

So, add on to your Italian itinerary, the town of Polignano a Mare which is situated in the southern Italy (province of Bari, Apulia). 30 km south of Bari, Apulia, unrolling along a craggy coastline, the cliff top fishing town is characterized by low scrubby bushes and evergreen trees ,the azure flags fluttering in the gay breeze spread across the precious strips of pristine beaches overlooking the sapphire seas with their crashing waves against the partially drowned sea caves.

polignano-mare-under-storm

Some historians believe, that in the 5th century B.C., this was an ancient marine colony called Neapolis, which with time became Polignano, the pearl village on rocks! The picturesque setting of the town, with its white-washed buildings blending with the cerulean hues of the sea against the golden sands and rugged grey rocks surrounded by the clear cyanic sky, establishes it as the arcady of Italy.

stone-bridge-poligano-mare

As the place is basically built on limestone caves, some of them go deep enough to reach the very centre of the town and there rests beneath the city,an underground cavern sparkling with cystal clear waters and sapphiric-blue stalactites and stalagmaites.Among these, the Grotto Nera’s rock formations, that look like time-frozen,structures of dripping mud and water, and the Cavernone dei Monumenti, filled with pillars emerging from the ground, formed of rocks that are brown, white, green and orange in colour, are very popular among tourists.however, one place that you ought not miss on your trip to Polignanao,is the La Grave which is but a wondrous hole in the ceiling of a grotto, through which the silvery sunlight streams, contrasting against the green and black rocks turning them golden in the halo of sun. Some other famous caves are the Cave of the Seal (Grotta della Foca) and the Stalactite Cave (Grotta Stalattitica).

As the legend has it that Queen Johanna I of Naples captivated by the unfurling spectacle of shimmering lights and colours of this place, had been overwhelmed with desire and with her private servant ventured into a romantic elopement, this place truly stands out as one of the most romantic getaways! But, amongst an array of unconventionally romantic caves, there lies at the heart of the city, the most terrific quintessential setting ever, for anything romantic, from proposals to weddings and to honeymoons too, The Grotta Palazzese. An enchanting dining experience cradled on pleasantly warm summer nights, at the Ristorante Grotta Palazzese, is what you would need to THE perfect plan. A place that refuses to be confined within the stereotyped four-walled structure has more to surprise you with its bewitching and unique ‘Grotta’ – Italian for ‘cave’ which is a stony restaurant, built centuries ago, inside a vaulted limestone cave, overlooking the jutting shoreline of Adriatic. Open during the summer months (May to October), the restaurant is an exceptional structure protruding out 74 feet above the sea level, granting the diners an opportunity to witness the harmonical performance of the waves crashing against the rocks just beneath them while they sit sipping along indulgent quantities of wine and satisfy their gastronomic desires with an assortment of luscious Italian delicacies.

  • If love walking and trekking or if you’re the health conscious kind, and would wish to shed some calories before being a part of the grand indulgence, meandering through the narrow streets of the medieval town scattered with white buildings, and then trekking up the rugged cliffs adorned with its natural caves, would be the best idea, even to work up the appetite before THE meal!

  • Unique for most water lovers, this place also caters to your diving and snorkelling fantasies by providing an untouched sea bed at the edge of the cliffs, extending before the town. Diving tours are offered for both beginners and professionals, where you can explore the shipwreck and marine-life found in Polignano’s unique coastline. For the licensed scuba divers, an assortment of experiences are laid down, from sea wreaks, and grottoes, to shallows. Other options include, the Torre Incine, which marks the inception of Polignano territory and is a typical fisherman’s creek. Towards its exit, at the depth of about 14 metres there lies a statue of Madonna, placed there by a club of diving devotees. Then, comes the Grotta dei Colombi(Pigeons Grotto),a naturally arched area, where you can possibly speleo-scuba dive! Isolotto S. Paolo also known as “Scoglio dell’Eremita” (“Hermit’s Rock”), bearing the ruins of a chapel dedicated to S. Antonio Abbate atop its head, is another awesome diving location. Polignano also hosts a submarine passage experience near Bastione S. Stefano (S. Stefano Bastion) which ends at Lama Monachile, where an ancient port Cala Porto exists.

  • A delight for the kids, the city also hosts an annual Kite festival in May, transforming the azure skies into a prismatic ballet of air-borne banners. Moreover, the also hosts some amazing events and merriment opportunities and some of them are: The Festival of the Madonna del Carmelo celebrated from the 15th to 17th July, the Festival of Santi Cosma and Davide that is held 13th August and the Festival of Christ held on 17th September, during which the Holy Cross is carried in procession by the people of the town. And then in August, maritime traditions come alive with the Fish Festival, a feast for all sea-foodies!

  • Step on to the enriched orchard of art and history, the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, which is at the centre of the old district, an open-air dwelling space encaved within the honeycombed white-washed buildings and spotted with potted palms. It is also known as the clock square as it boasts the communal clock which is still said to take tolls out of time! A place where any art enthusiast can get lost is that gallery of art works by Vivarini and Stefano da Putignano, at the Ex-Cathedral.And, above the sea lies an outstanding Abbey of San Vito, which is dedicated to the town’s patron saint and is popular for its wide terrace and an arcade overlooking the seas.

grotto_palazzese_cave_restaurant

  • And, after all the excavation, the best place to recline is no other but Ristorante Grotto Palazzese, the so-called “palatial cave”, which is one of the largest caves in Apulia, now transformed into an unbelievably spectacular hotel cum restaurant. This is the paradise of any foodie, as the menu here is strongly connected to the town’s culinary glorious past and what can be better than Italian food and wine, that too inside a cave! However, the ambience and the experience of dining inside the grotto far exceeds the standards of the moreish Italian delicacies.

cliffs-poligano-mare

Polignano a Mare, an epitome of overwhelming beauty, is but fit to call a place which blends reality with fantasy. Being an important port of trade and commerce for centuries, it breeds a crossword of multiculturalism. Though an abode nourished by Greek roots and influences on one hand and on the other, wrapped up in traditional and architectural panache of the Arab, Spanish and Byzantine worlds, it still stands out with its striking individuality which breathes into every traveller who journeys here, the spirit to be free with the gushing wind and fly in the endless sky!
